Ssuuna is a self-taught artist whose practice centers on the decolonization of art. He uses local materials such as soil, bark cloth, and found objects to challenge and subvert colonial histories of cultural erasure and material exploitation. Soil, rich with local heritage and history, serves as a powerful form of resistance against the dominance of Western materials and aesthetics in contemporary art. He reclaims cultural identity and expresses resistance to the colonial legacies that have long sought to diminish indigenous knowledge and creativity.

The central theme in his work is environmental conservation and sustainability, advocating for the preservation of the earth that sustains us for future generations. He also reflects on his childhood experiences, relationships, and community. He delves into themes of identity, exploring the complexities of culture, social dynamics, and economics. His frequent use of green symbolizes life, nature, serenity, and vitality. His work celebrates our origins, childhood, and motherland, evoking a sense of nostalgia and belonging. Artist Statement
My work reflects the essence of my life experiences—drawing from childhood, friendships, family, and community—while exploring themes of identity through the intricacies of culture, society, and economics. I also focus on environmental sustainability and the preservation of our planet for future generations. In a world increasingly threatened by climate change and ecological destruction, I aim to raise awareness and inspire action.
Soil is my primary medium because of its profound symbolism. As the foundation of ecosystems and the source of nourishment for life, soil represents the interconnectedness of nature. I emphasize the importance of caring for the Earth, highlighting its role as both our home and a vital resource to protect. My work seeks to address pressing environmental challenges by promoting reusing, recycling, and reducing waste. I encourage viewers to rethink their consumption habits and recognize their collective impact on the planet. By engaging with these themes, I hope to challenge patterns of overconsumption and environmental degradation, contributing to the global ecological crisis. I believe art has the power to provoke thought and inspire change, creating a space for dialogue about adopting more sustainable and harmonious lifestyles. The tactile nature of soil allows me to create artworks that foster a visceral connection to the earth, serving as a reminder of nature’s fragility and the urgent need for collective action.
